UNIT 4: OUR CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS
GETTING STARTED: A lesson on customs and traditions
I. Objectives:
1. Knowledge. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Pronounce words containing clusters: /spr/, /str/ correctly in isolation and in context.
- Use the lexical items related to the topic “customs and traditions”.
- Use should and shouldn’t correctly and appropriately to give advice.
- Express obligation and necessity using the correct form of have to.
2. Ability.
- Practice the dialogue fluently
- Ss will be able to use the lexical items related to custom and traditions and read correct intonation.
3. Attitude.
- Love the customs and traditions of VietNam.
- Have respect for teachers.
II. Teaching aids: Text books, cassette, chalk, pictures and some boards.

Contents
Activity 1. (5’)
Aim: Ss complete the sentences to get ready for the topic
- Give some pictures of some ethnic monorities and their traditions and customs to help students know more about the words customs” and “traditions” before leading to the Getting started.
Activity 2. (20’)
Aim: Ss practice vocab relating to the topic and speaking correct intonation.
- Explain some new word
- Ss look at the picture in Getting started and answer some questions.
- Ss answer the questions. T quickly write Ss’ answers on the board.
- Play the recording
- Ss listen and read the dialogue
- T asks Ss if their guesses on the board are correct.
Activity 3. 15’
Aim: Ss can practice the lexical items related to the topic.
a/ Find the the words or phrases that means:
- Ss do Ex a individually, then share the answers with their partner. One ss writes the answers on the board
b/ True or false
- Ss do Ex a individually. Then share the answers with their partner
- Ss write the answers on the board, others correct then give their explanation.
c/ Answer
- Ss answer the questions orally without reading the dialogue
- Ss work in pairs. 2 Ss write on the board. Ss read the conversation and check the answers.
- Ss share the answers with friends.
- T sums up.
d/ Fill in the missing words
- Ss read the conversation again then do Ex individually. Share the answers with their partner.
- Two ss write the answers on the board. Then give the right answers.
- Ss look at the pictures then say what they see. Then fill in the gaps with some customs and traditions.
- Ss identify the new words. T helps Ss to read the words correctly. Then ask Ss to give their matching.
- Ss give answers. Explain and give the meaning of the words and phrases.
- T helps them if necessary.
Activity 4. (5’)
Aim:Ss summary content and are guided to study at home.
- Teacher gets students to retell what they have learnt.
- T guides the way to do their homework.
Review vocabularies related to ethnic minorities.
