Lesson 2: Speak & Listen
I. Objectives:
- Ss practice speaking about preparations in case of typhoon.
- By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to talk about what they want to buy and do for a typhoon.
- Ss practice listening to the passage about what you should do when you live in an earthquake zone.
II. Preparations:
- A list of preparing things ( P. 76). Some pictures of typhoons.
- A cassette and the tape. Keys to the table P. 77.
III. Teaching procedure:

- The Ss` weather forecast.

A. Warm up:Chatting: ( T- whole class)
Ask Ss some questions about the earthquakes:

* Presentation:
a, Pre- teach vocabulary:
- bucket ( n): ( drawing) - latch (n): ( real thing)
- ladder ( n): ( drawing) - peg ( n): ( real thing)
* Checking vocabulary: Slap the board.
b, Revision: ( T- whole class)

Question: What happens if there is a typhoon?
- Get Ss to answer this question.
Possible answers:
- There may be a power cut. - There must be heavy rain.
- Big trees may fall down. - The market may be closed.
- There may be a flood.........
* Practice:
- Ss do ex. 3a on page 76. They have to check what preparations they think should be done for a typhoon.
Answer keys:
- Buying some canned food. - Buying candles.
- Buying matches. - Filling all buckets withwater.
- Buying a ladder. - Fixing the leak in the roof.
- Tying the roof to the ground with pegs and ropes.
- Checking all the window and door latches.
- Elicit some questions and get Ss to ask and answer in pairs.
a, Why do people need to buy food? ( Because the markets will be closed).
b, What food do we need to buy? ( Rice, oil, canned food, flour, instant..
c, Why do we need to buy candles? ( Bcause there may be power cut)...
- Ask Ss to use the expressions on page 77 when talking to one another.

- roller (n): ( picture) - prevent ( v): ( in context): The heavy rain prevents us from going on a picnic.
* Checking vocabulary: Slap the board.
B, Prediction: (pair work)
- Set the scene: An expert is giving a talk on how to live with earthquakes
- Have Ss look at the box on page 77 and guess the words in the blanks from (1) to ( 9).
- Give feedback.
* While- listening:
- Have Ss listen to the tape twice and check their prediction.
- Share their answers with their partners.
