UNIT 8: SPORTS AND GAMES
Period 65: LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED
At the gym
I. Objectives: After finishing the lesson, students will be able to:
+ Know and write the name of sports
+ Use the lexical items related to the topic" sports and games"
+ Use the combinations: go, play, do + N/ V-ing
+ Know and use the past simple tense.
II. Language focus:
1. Vocabulary: congratulations, superfit club, get off....
2. Grammar: The past simple tense
III. Resources: A teaching plan, T’s book and sts’ book, a tape and a cassette recorder, pictures.

Activity 1:
- Ss answer the questions
- Ss look at the picture and answer what it shows or what might Duong and Mai talk about.
Question and answer:
* What sports and games do you like to play / to watch on their spare time?
* What do you do on their spare time?
* Who do you see in the picture?
* Where are they?
* What are they talking about?
- They are Duong and Mai
- They are at the gym
- They are talking about the gym, the sport they can play and they like.

Aims: By the end of this activity, students will be able to use some vocabularies and structures to talk about some activities, sport(s), game(s) they do in their spare time
- Use the combinations : DO, PLAY, GO + N/ V- ing
Method: Matching, pair work, group work, individual work, discussion.
Capacity development: sub -board, pictures, cassette
Getting started:
Activity 2
- Write the title on the board and explain the meaning of “At the gym” and ask Ss to guess what the picture might show or what the conversation might be about.
- More explains new words and structures in listen and read.
- Play the recording.
- Ss listen and read.
I- Listen and read
1. Vocabulary:
* Karate[kə`rɑ:ti](n): môn võ ca-ra-tê
* to win - won
* fit (a) ( to keep fit
* good at
* boxing [`bɔksiη](n): quyền Anh
* active [`æktiv](a): tích cực, hoạt động, nhanh nhẹn, linh lợi
* equipment (n): Thiết bị , dụng cụ
*get off (v): Khởi hành
* congratulations: Xin chúc mừng
2. Structures:
The combinations : DO, PLAY, GO + N/ V- ing

Activity 3 : 1a
- Ss answer the questions.
- Then, Ss discuss in groups (they may refer to the conversation).
- T checks their answer and gives explanations if necessary
Activity 4 :1b
-Ss find the phrases in the conversation
- Ss practice saying them together (play the recording again if necessary). Explain the meanings (or give synonyms/ Vietnamese equivalent) to the Ss, then give some examples.
Activity 5 : 1c
- Ss practice the short conversation in pairs before creating their short role-plays.
Activity 6
- Ss listen and repeat these words and phrases
- Check and correct their pronunciation. Give them the meaning of the words. Vietnam.
Activity 7:
- Ss write the correct words in spaces.
- Let Ss check their answer ( in groups)
Activity 8:
- Ss put the words in the correct group.
- Get feedback and correct.
Activity 9:
- Some Ss write their answer on the board. Then let the class comment and give them the correct answer. T may call some Ss to read the sentences
* Practice:
1a. Answer the questions
1. Duong can play table tennis and do karate
2. Mai is (going to learn karate)
3. Because the equipment (there) is modern and the people are friendly
4. Duong played with Duy and won (for the first time)
5. At the karate club
1b. Some Colloquial expressions
1. Wow: used to express surprise
2. Congratulation: used to congratulate Sd/ to tell Sb that you are pleased about their success
3. Great: used to show admiration
4. See you: used when you say goodbye
1c. Make a dialogue with the expressions. Then practice them.
2. Listen and repeat these words and phrases:
