Unit 7: Pollution
Lesson 4: Speaking
Class description:
The class includes 25 girls and 15 boys. Most of them are quite good at English, but someone is lazy and naughty. As for scheduling, class will meet three times a week for 45 minutes each. Our classroom will be equipped with a computer, internet, projector and black board.
Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:
Use lexical items related to the topic ‘Pollution’ to talk about types of pollution.
Use words and phrases showing cause/ effect relationships to describe the causes and effects ofpollution.
Talk about the causes and effects of water pollution as well as ways to reduce it.
Time:About 45 minutes
Teaching aids: computer, internet, projector, speaker, video, black board,…
Anticipate problems:
Ss might be weaker than T’s expected and therefore the reading text will be too difficult.
Ss might be get stuck with some new words while reading the text and therefore be unable to find answers to detailed questions
Ss might not understand T’s instructions.
Technology (computer/ projector) won’t be working.

-T shows a short video about “water pollution” in the screen.
-T requires Ssto work individually and answer the questions below (T may give some cues).
1. Can you list some kinds of pollution?
2.Do you know about water pollution?What is it?
-T calls some Ss to stand up and answers these questions.
* Expected answers:
1. There are many kinds of pollution such as air pollution, land pollution, noise pollution, water pollution,....
2. -Yes, I do. Water pollution is the contamination of any body of water (lakes, groundwater, oceans, etc)
- Ss watch the video.
-Sswork individually and find out the answers.
-Ss answer these questions.
-Lead Ss into the lesson.
- Improve their individual working skill.
-Make them moreinterested in this topic.
While-speaking

Task1:
- T requiresSs work in groups to discuss the solutions to water pollution.
- To help them focus their ideas, T can suggestthey make two sub-headings:
*Point source pollution
* Non-point source pollution
-Ss can then go through each cause in the presentation and think of the solutions. For example:
Factories dump industrial waste.
Solution 1: Give heavy fines to companies that are found doing this.
Solution 2: Educate companies about the environment.
Solution 3: Give tax breaks to companies that find ‘ clean’ ways to dispose of their waste

-T invites one group to quickly present their solutions. Other groups add any ideas if necessary. As it is an open activity, accept all the answers as long as they
make sense.
-T gives feedbacks.
-Sswork in groups to discuss the solutions to water pollution.
-Ss make notes of the answers on a piece of paper
-One group quickly present their solutions. Other groups add any ideas if necessary.
- Improve their group working skill.
- Help Ss know more sollutions about water pollution.

-T sets the time of about five to seven minutes. It is betterif Ss draw the diagram on a big piece of paper.
