UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL
LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED – LISTEN AND READ
I. OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to introduce their fatherland to a foreigner pen pal about some places of interest in Ha Noi such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Ho Chi Minh museum, history museum.
II. LANGUAGE CONTENTS:
1. Vocabulary:
Correspond, impress, friendliness, mosque, pray, atmosphere, depend on, keep in touch.
2. Grammar:
Past simple tense with wish
III. TEACHING AIDS:
Pictures, tape, posters, book
IV. PROCEDUDE
1. Warm up:
- Get Ss to play game 'Matching': Match the names with correct pictures( on p. 6)
1. Temple of Literature
2. Hung Temple
3. Revolutionary Museum
4. Dong Xuan market
* Answer: 1. b 2. a 3. d 4. c
- Introduce some more interesting place in Ha Noi.
2. Presentation:
- Introduce the topic of the lesson: “Imagine that a foreign pen pal is coming to stay with you for a week. What activities would you like to do during the visit?”
- Have Ss listen to the tape once to find new words.
* New words:
- Correspond (v): translation
- Be impressed by: translation
- Friendliness (n): explanation - Friend (n) – Friendly (adj)
- Mosque (n): picture
- Atmosphere ( n): Translation
- Keep in touch (v): Translation
- Pray (v): picture
- Worship (n): Translation
+ Checking technique: Rub out and remember
* Model sentences:
Ex: I wish you had a longer vacation.
=> S + Wish + S + V (past simple)
+ Notes: 'be' - >'were' is used for all subjects after 'wish'.
Ex: I wish I were taller.
- Ask Ss to do practice: put the verb into correct form.
They wish they (live)……………in Ha Noi.
He wishes he (be)……………a pilot.
3. Practice:
- Get Ss to listen to the text again then call out some Ss to read it aloud.
- Have Ss do exercise: decide whether the statements are true or false.
a. Lan's pen pal comes from Malaysia.
b. Kualar Lumber is a small city .
c. The girls visited Hang Luoc Street on Monday.
d. They will write letters to each other again.
- Collect students' answers then write on the board.
- Call on some Ss to correct the answers in front of class.
* Answers:

- Have Ss read the text and do the exercise below: choose the correct answer for each sentence.
- Call on some Ss to report their answers and correct mistakes if necessary then give correct answers.

4. Production:
- Ask Ss to answer the questions.

- Good Ss: write again sentences with structure: Wish + pat simple.
