UNIT 12: A VACATION ABROAD
Lesson 1 LISTEN AND READ (p.p.111-113)
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, Sts will be aware of how to make, accept and decline invitations
a. Grammar: 1. Progressive tense with always 2. - Past progressive - Past progressive with when and while
b. Vocabulary: include, come over, pick up, abroad
2. Skills: Listening - Reading
3. Attitude: Sts will know how to decline someone’s invitations politely.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher:
- Prepare the lesson carefully: (teaching aids make lesson plan by power point, book, laptop, sound)
2. Students:
- Learn the previous lesson by heart.
- Prepare the new lesson at home: (write new words; read text; answer questions)
III. STEPS FOR TEACHING:
1. Check the previous lesson: (5’)
- T asks Sts to rewrite sentences, using Would/ Do you mind…..
2. New lesson: (40’)

- T shows the photocopied pictures or flags to Sts; one by one, and ask Sts to guess what country it is.

Checking technique: Rub Out and Remember
- T asks Sts to close their notebooks and look at the board.
- T rubs out the English words, one at a time, points to the Vietnamese words and asks Sts “What’s this in English?”
- When all the English words are rubbed out, T goes through the Vietnamese list & gets Sts to call out the English words

- Set the scene:
Mrs. Quyen is going to the USA for a vacation. She is ringing her friend, Mrs. Smith, to tell her about the trip.
- T puts the chart on the board and asks Sts to read the statements.
1. Mrs. Quyen is calling Mrs. Smith from the airport in San Francisco.
2. Mrs. Smith invites Mrs. Quyen and her husband to stay with her while they are in town.
3. Mrs. Quyen doesn’t accept Mrs. Smith‘s invitation because she wants to stay with a Vietnamese friend of hers.
4. Mrs. Quyen and her husband will be in the USA for 3 days.
5. Mrs. Quyen and her husband will come over to Mrs. Smith’s place for dinner one night.
6. Mr. Thanh – Mrs. Quyen’s husband goes abroad for a business meeting.
- T asks Sts to work in pairs to decide if the statements are true or false.
- T gets Sts to give their answers and write them on the broad.
- T has Sts open their books; listen to the tape while reading the dialogue on p.112.
- T calls some Sts to correct the false statements.
