Unit 12: AN OVERCROWDED WORLD
Communication
I. Objectives
1. Knowledge, Skills, Attitude:
By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to talk about what they should do and shouldn’t do while taking tourist trips.
a. Knowledge:
- Vocabulary: the items related to things to overcrowded cities
- Grammar: Comparisons of quantifier: more, less / fewer
b. Skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
c. Attitude: Be concerned about the causes and effects of overpopulation
2. Capacity is formed and developed for students
- Self – learning capability
- Communicative competence
II. Preparation
1. Teacher: text book, extra board, cassette tape and real objects.
2. Students: textbook, notebook, workbook.
III. Students’ activities
1. Warm up (5’) Aims: Ss can Talk about what they should do and shouldn’t do while taking tourist trips.

Contents
Preparation: Ss have five pieces of paper on which the following phrases are written: grow flowers and trees, speak English, visit Temple of Literature, buy souvenirs.
T explain how the game is played;
Game cards.
2. Knowledge formation activities (36’)

Aim: developing their speaking skill
- Ss complete the exercise independently. Then T divides Ss into pairs and asks them to compare their answers.
- Ss write their answers on the board.
- T gives feedback.
1. Look at the pictures and discuss.
1. big city, desert
2. - Big city is beautiful with bridges, buildings. It’s overcrowded.
- The desert is quiet.
- Ss complete the exercise independently.
- T asks them to explain their choices.
2. Match the words below with the places in 1.
Big city - high living standard, clean water, densely-populated, good education, crime.
Desert - poor healthcare, crime, malnutrition, hunger.
- T tells that the readings give the same kind of information.
- To help less advanced Ss, T can draw a table on the board on like this
- Then T asks Ss to fill the table with the information before talking about the differences.
- Encourage Ss to guess the meanings of the extra words such as: density, physician, slavery…., Then T checks Ss’s understanding of all these words and gives definitions for any words that Ss still do not understand.
3. Read the information about the two places.

- The population of Mauritania is very small, only over three million people. Hong Kong is much larger. It has more than 7 million people.
- The area of Mauritania is very large, 1.030.700km2. Hong Kong is smaller, it is only 1.104km2.
- The main economy is agriculture in Mauritania. Hong Kong has service industry and tourism for economy.
