FUTURE
Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED
At the technology club!

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Competences: By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
- To practice listening and reading.
- Use the lexical items related to the topic “Communication in the future”
2.Knowledge:
+ Vocabulary:
- Use vocabulary to talk about “Communication in the future”
+ Grammar:
3. Attributes:
- Be cooperative and supportive in pair work and teamwork.
- Understand the main idea of the conversation.
- Actively join in class activities.

III. PROCEDURES
1. Activity 1: WARM UP (5 minutes)
Aims:
- To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson;
- To lead into the new unit
Content/Performance tasks:
- To have some warm-up activities to creat a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to
inspire students to warm up to the subject and new lesson.
Outcome/Performance Products:
- Have a chance to practice speaking English

Implementation:
+ Greeting

* Vocabulary pre-teaching
- Teacher introduces the vocabulary.
- Teacher explains the meaning of the new vocabulary by pictures.
- Teacher reveals that the words according to the pictures will appear in the reading
text and asks students to open their textbook to find these words.
- Otherwise, teacher can:
Show pictures of the logos of popular communication apps, such as Facebook
messenger, Viber, Zalo, Zoom, etc. very quickly.
Hide the pictures and ask students to name the apps they can remember from the
pictures.
Elicit from students the common functions of these apps (They are all for people to
communicate with each other without meeting face to face.). Ask students if they
are using any of these apps.
* Lead into the new lesson by saying: Nowadays we can keep in contact with each
other easily thanks to communication technologies. But what about in the future?
Let's see how communication might change in the future.

2. Activity 2: PRESENTATION (5 minutes)
Aims:
- To set the context for the introductory conversation;
- To introduce the topic of the unit and the vocabulary to be learnt.
Content/Performance Tasks:
- Learn some new words. Read the conversation and find out new words. Focus on
topic of the lesson, grammar points.
Outcome/Performance Product:
- Knowing more new words. students know how to pronounce the new words
correctly and use them in appropriate situations. Students know the topic of the
unit and be ready for the conversation.

- Introduce the two characters: Trang and Mark. Explain that they are members of
the technology club and they are preparing for a video conference.
- Play the recording twice for students to listen and read along. Have students
underline the words and phrases that are related to the topic of the unit while they
are listening and reading.
- Invite some pairs of students to read the conversation aloud.
- Have students say the words and phrases in the conversation that they think are
related to the topic Communication.
+ Quickly write them on one part of the board. Comment on students' answers

*** Set the context:
- Play the recording twice for students to listen and read along. Have students
underline the words or phrases that are related to the topic of the unit while they
are listening and reading.
- Have students practise the conversation in pairs, then invite some pairs to read the
conversation aloud.
- Have students say the words or phrases in the text that they think are related to
the topic of the unit.
- Quickly write the words or phrases on one part of the board or show the
conversation on a slide and highlight the words or phrases. Comment on students'
answers.

3. Activity 3: PRACTICE (25 minutes)
* Task 1:
Aims:
- To help students understand the conversation.
Content/Performance:
- Listen and read the conversation.
Outcome/Performance Products:
- Students understand the content of the conversation and know the vocabulary
related to the topic.

Implementation:
Task 2. Read the conversation again and circle the correct answer A, B, or C..
- Ask students to read the questions and choose the correct answers from what they
remember after their listening.
- Elicit the answers from student. Write their answers on the board.
-Now have them read the conversation again to check their answers.
- Ask students for their answers again, referring to the answers that have been
written on the board before.
- Confirm the correct answers.

Aim:
- To introduce some vocabulary items related to communication technologies.
Content/Performance Tasks:
- Match the words and phrases in the conversation with their pictures.
Outcome/Performance Products:
- Students understand the content of the conversation and know the vocabulary
related to the topic. Students do the tasks correctly.

- Teacher confirms the correct answers.
- Teacher has some students practise saying the words and phrases again.

related to the topic.

- Have students work in pairs and find the underlined words and phrases of 4 in the
Getting started conversation, then guess the meaning of these words/ phrases using
the clues in the conversation.
- Teacher has students share their guesses and confirm the correct ones.
- Teacher has students complete Activity 4.
+ For more able class, Have students work in groups to make sentences with the
underlined words and phrases.
- Teacher checks and confirms the answers.

4. Activity 4: PRODUCTION (5 minutes)
Aims:
- To help students practise using the vocabulary items related to communication
technology.
Content/Performance Tasks:
- Complete the diagram of the history of communication technology with the
words and phrases from the box.
Outcome/Performance Products:
- Students' conversations.
* Suggested answers:
1. carrier pigeon

3. mobile phone

Implementation:
Task 5: Work in groups. Complete the diagram of the history of
communication technology with the words and phrases from the box.

- Teacher sets time (3-5 minutes) for students to do this activity in groups.
- Teacher tells students that they can use the diagram to help them.
- Teacher has students read aloud the answers and confirms the answers.
- For a more able class, ask students to work in their groups again and prepare a
short talk about the history of communication technology.

IV. WRAP-UP ACTIVITY, GIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON SELF-STUDYING HOMEWORK / ASSIGNMENT (5 minutes)
- Write healthy activities, health problems on the board.
- Ask students to say aloud some words / phrases they remember from the lesson
related to each category. Quickly write these words / phrases under the categories.
Ask if students can add some more under each category.
If there is a projector in the classroom, show the conversation and highlight the key
words related to the topic.
