UNIT 4: LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
PERIOD 20: Getting Started – Listen and Read.

I. OBJECTIVES
- Improving sts` living skill. Sts get acquainted with an interview of studying English.
- Developing sts` listening and reading skills.
- After studying the lesson, sts. know how to learn English effectively and love learning English more.

II. LANGUAGE CONTENTS:
1. Vocabulary: words relating to learning English
2. Grammar: Reported speech in WH- questions and statements

III. METHOD AND TEACHING AIDS:
1. Method: Audio-lingual method
2. Teaching aids: CD and cassette player, textbook, pictures…

IV. TEACHING PROCEDURES:
1.Warm up:
* Guessing game: LANGUAGE
-> Cues: It`s property of every nation. / It begins in "L". / It`s a means of communication.
* Brainstorming:
- Ask sts to think about the way they learn and improve their English, write on the board
- Sts answer, using the ideas on their books and add some more ideas: write diary in English, watch English movie…
- Ask sts some questions about the way they learn English
1. Do you usually watch English TV programs?
2. Can you sing English songs?
3. How often do you use your dictionaries?
4. Do you have a pen pal? How often do you write to him?

2-Pre-reading
- Let sts. listen to the tape once (closed books), then answer the questions:
+ Who are speakers in the dialogue? (Lan and Paola)
+ What are they talking about? (They are talking about an English exam.)
- Let sts. listen to the tape again (opened books)
- Provide and explain new words:
* New words:
- exam (n) – examination (n) - aspect (n)
- examiner (n) - examinee (n) - attend (v)
- written examination - course (n)
- oral examination - candidate (n)
- Sts. practice reading new words chorally/ individually.

3-While reading
* Read and check (exercise (a)):
- Ask sts. to practice the dia. in pairs
- Give sts. 2 questions:
1. How many questions did the examiner ask Lan? (8 questions)
2. Were the questions in oral exam difficult or easy? (difficult)
- Collect sts` answers -> give feedback.

* Exercise (b):
- Ask sts. to read the dia. in silence and decide what questions the examiner asked Lan.
- Let sts do the exercise individually, then compare the answers with their partners.

Answer: Questions 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14

4-Post reading (speaking)
- Ask sts to practice asking and answering in pairs. One st plays the role of examiner and the other plays the role of Lan.
- Call on some pairs to perform their conversation in front of class.
- Give feedback and correct.

5- Homework:
- Ask Sts. to learn new words by heart; prepare “SPEAK”

Period 21: SPEAK

I. OBJECTIVES:
- Sts. know more about language schools in UK, USA and Australia.
- Developing sts’ speaking and listening skills.
- After studying the lesson, Sts. know how to persuade S.O to do S.th.

II. LANGUAGE CONTENTS:
1. Vocabulary: expressions for persuading and words relating to learning English
2. Grammar: Tenses (review)

III. METHOD AND TEACHING AIDS:
1. Method: Audio-lingual method, communicative approach
2. Teaching aids: textbook, cardboard…

IV- TEACHING PROCEDURES:
1-Warm up:
* pelmanism
- Prepare 10 cards with number on one side and the name of the countries and their capitals on the other side
- Make sure the countries and the capitals are mixed up. Stick the cards on the board so sts can only see the numbers
- Turn over the cards and see if they match ex: USA – Washington DC, that team gets one mark.
If not, turn the card face down again and ask the other team to choose
-Continue until all the cards are turned over
