Lesson 1 LISTEN AND READ (p.p.121-122)
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, Sts will be able to ask for explanations of events.
a. Grammar: 1. Passive form: Be + Past participle 2. Compound words: Noun + V-ing 3. Reported Speech
b. Vocabulary: Competition (n), rub (v), Water – fetching ( n), Fire – making (n), Rice – cooking (n), Yell (v) = shout loudly, Urge (v)- Teaminate (n), Bamboo (n), Separate ( v), Husk (n), Judge (n), Award (v)(n), Grand prize (n), Council (n), Participate (v)
2. Skills: Listening - Reading
3. Attitude: Sts will try to maintain the beauty of Vietnamese traditional festivals.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher:
- Prepare the lesson carefully: (teaching aids make lesson plan by power point, book, laptop, sound)
2. Students:
- Learn the previous lesson by heart.
- Prepare the new lesson at home: (write new words; read text; answer questions)
III. STEPS FOR TEACHING:
1. Check the previous lesson: (5’)
- Write sentences with the words given, using Progressive tense with always
2. New lesson: (40’)

3. Huckleberry likes mountain-climbing.
4. Oliver is keen on pottery.
5. Robinson is fond of crowded places.

Checking technique: What and Where
- Elicit words from Sts and write them inside the circles.
- Get Sts to repeat and rub out the words, not the circles- continue until the circles are empty.
- When Sts seem to remember all the words, ask Sts to come to the board and fill in the circles with the right words.
Open prediction
- Set the scene:
Ba invites his friend Liz to a traditional festival in the North of Vietnam. Do you know what kind of festival it is? (It is the rice cooking festival.)
- Ask Sts to guess what they are going to read by asking questions then write Sts` answers on the board.
Suggestions:
+ How many competitions do people enter in a rice- cooking festival? (3)
+ In water-festival competition, what do people do? How about a fire- making competition? A rice-cooking competition?
