Unit 12: MUSIC
Period 5: language focus
Aims:
-Students can pronounce 2 sounds /s/ - /z/ and understand how to use
“To+infinitive” correctly.
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Distinguish the sounds /s/ & /z/.
- Use To-inf to express purposes and make Wh-questions appropriately.
Materials: Student’s book, notebook
Anticipated problem:
-Students may make mistakes when using conjunctions and doing exercises, so teacher should help them.
Method of teaching: Integrated, mainly communicative

- Write some sentences on the board and underline the “to+infinitive”.
+ She gets up early morning to cook breakfast for her family.
+ To relax, Susan listens to pop music.
- Ask students to comment on the use of “to+ infinitive” in these examples.
- Elicit the use of “to+ infinitive”: to express purposes.
- Ask some students give some similar examples.
Exercise 1:
- Let students work in pairs.
- Ask students to do Exercise 1.
- Walk round to provide help.
- Ask them to go to the board and write down the answers.
- Give feedback.
* Answer keys:
1. I phoned for her to tell her the good news.
2. I’m saving money to buy a cassette player.
3. She practises singing all the day to win the singing contest.
4. I’m learning French to sing French songs.
5. The monitor always go to class on time to set a good example for the class.
- Check and correct mistakes.
Exercise 2:
- Introduce Exercise 2 to students and explain how to do it
- Ask students to do it.
- Let them work individually.
- Check, correct mistakes.

- Call on some students to make some wh-questions and write them on board
- Elicit the form and the use of “Wh-questions”.
