UNIT 9: NATURAL DISASTERS
Lesson 3: READ
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Educational aims: Ss should be alert and careful with natural disasters warned by scientists.
2. Teaching aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to practice the reading for details about the natural disasters in the world: earthquakes, tidal waves, typhoons, volcanoes, tornadoes.
II. PREPARATIONS: book, cassette tape, extra – board.
III. PROCEDURES:

1. Warm – up (5’)
- Review name some natural disasters

2. Pre - reading (10’)
- Introduce some new words:

+ (to) strike – struck (v)
+ (to) suck up (v)
+ shift (n)
+ tidal wave (n)
+ (to) warn (v)
+ tornado (n)
+ abrupt (adj)
+ (to) erupt (v) ( eruption (n)
+ funnel-shaped (adj)
- Have Ss practice the new words.
- Check vocabulary.
- Set the scene: you are going to read a text about some major natural disasters in the world
- Have Ss read the sentences and guess which sentence is true, which is false
- Guess the meaning of new words
- Practice.
- Whole class
- Listen.
- Guess the sentences
3. While - reading (20’)
- Have Ss read the text and check their prediction
- Call Ss to get feedback
