UNIT 9: NATURAL DIASTERS
Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED – LISTEN AND READ
I. OBJECTIVES:
Teaching aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to get the information from the weather forecast, know how to talk about the temperature and weather.
II. PREPARATIONS: Textbook, pictures, cassette tape
III. PROCEDURES:

1. Warm - up (7’)
- Have Ss look at the pictures and match them with natural disasters
- Give the meaning of new words:
+ earthquake (n)
+ typhoon (n)
+ snowstorm (n)
+ disaster (n)
- Pair work
earthquake typhoon
volcano snowstorm
- Listen and write.
2. Presentation (10’)
- Set the sense: Thuy is talking to her grandmother.
- Have Ss answer some questions:
1. What are they watching?
2. Why does Thuy want to watch weather forecast?
- Introduce some new words
+ turn –up (v)
+ coast (n)
+ expect (v)
+ trust (v)
+ thunderstorm (n)
+ degree Celsius (0C)
+ delta (n)
+ Just in case (n)
- Have Ss practice new words.
- Check vocabulary
- Have Ss listen to the tape (2 times)
- Introduce structure:
How to talk about the temperature and weather
Ex: Ha Noi will have temperature between 230C and 270C.
Ho Chi Minh city’s temperature will be between 270C and 350C.
Ha Noi and areas to the north will be hot.
- Listen
- Guess the answers
- Listen and write.
- Listen to the tape and repeat
- Whole class
- Listen to the tape.
- Listen and write.
3. Practice (20’)
- Have Ss practice the dialogue
- Call Ss to practice before class.
- Have Ss read the dialogue again and complete the blanks/p.53.
- Call Ss to get feedback.
