Lesson 1 : Getting started- A holiday story
I. Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
- Understand the content of the dialogue between Nam and Phuong, know more about Brazil- Rio de Janeiro.
- Understand the problems in the slums.
- Do exercises to widen their vocabulary about Overcrowded places.
- Students can use vocabulary to describe the overcrowded places.
- Listen and read to get information from the text.
1. Knowledge
- Vocabulary: the lexical items related to the topic “An overcrowded world ”: diverse, overcrowded, slum, spacious , .…
- Grammar:Comparison of quantifiers: fewer
2. Skills: practice and develop reading and speaking skills.
3. Attitude: - Ss know how to express their opinions about something.
- Students are interested in learning English more.
4. Competences:
- Self – learning capability
- Co-operation
- Communicativecompetence
II. Preparation:
1. Teacher: textbook, lesson plan, pictures, projector …
2. Students: textbooks, notebooks…
III. Teaching methods: communicative approach, group- work, pair-work, individual, teaching methods by practicing,…
IV. Anticipated problems
- It’s rather difficult for students to make use of all the contents of this unit.
- It may take time and make noise while organizing group-work.
( Teacher’s solution: Teacher suggests students with difficult content in the lesson control the class carefully.

Rub out and remember
- T gets Ss to close the books.
- T gets Ss to say all the words 2-3 times
- T rubs out the new word at the each time.
- T gets Ss to repeat the words, including the rubber out words by pointing at their meanings
- T continues until all the words are rubbed out.
- T calls Ss to write the words again on the board.
- T checks the answers and Ss’spelling.
- T asks Ss: how many statements in the table?
- T asks Ss to read the statements and guess which ones are true (T), which ones are false (F).
- T plays the recording.
- T requires Ss to look at the conversation, listens the recording.
- T divides the class into 2 groups to read the conversation: Nam and Phuong
- T exchangesthe their turn
- T calls 2 Ss to read conversation.
- T asks Ss some questions to elicits the content of the conversation from Ss
- T checks the answers with Ss
- T gets Ss to pay attention to the sentence: “There are probably fewer things to see and to do the slums, aren’t there?”
And ask: After fewer, do they use Singular noun or Plural noun?
- T requires Ss to read the conversation again
- T asks Ss to check their predictions and corrects False sentences
