Period 1: Consolidation
1.Present simple tense:
Form: I,You, We, They + Verb (without to)
He, she, It + verb + s/es
* Note: add "es" with the verbs ended : O,S,X,CH,SH
How to use:
We use the present simple tense for:
Thought and feeling
Ex: I hate quiz programs
I`m hungry. I want something to eat.
I believe it`s the right thing to do.
- States, things staying the same, facts and things that are true for a long time
( The present simple says something was true in the past, is true in the present, and will be true in the future. It is used for general statements of fact.)
Wood float on water.
The earth turns around the sun
Water consits of hydroren and oxygen.
The world is round
The computer belongs to Hoa
Repeated actions (The present simple is used to express habitual or everyday activity.
I study for two hours every night.
He always eats a sandwich for lunch.
She usually goes to work by car.
We play table tennis every thursday.
In phrases like: I promise, I agree.
In a negative question with Why to make a sugguestion
Why don`t we.......
* Present simple tense with future meaning.
We can use the present simple for the future when we are talking about timetable, usually a public one such as a train timetable
Ex: The match starts at half past seven.
What time do they finish work?- At 5 pm.
Note:Distinguish the present simple and the present continuous.
The present simple for the time table
The present continuous for the arrangements to do in the future.
EX: A:(You/do) anything tonight?
B: Yes, (I/go) to the station to meet my friend (he/stay) here
for the weekend. His train (get) in at 8.15.
A: Oh, of course. I`d forgotten about that.
B: May be we`ll see you later. What (you/do) tonight?
A: Oh, (I/go) to the cinema with Anddy. The film (finish)
quite early, so we (go) to another place afterwards.
2. The present perfect tense.
Form: EX:
I have seen my sister in the park.
She has finished her homework recently.
He has read this novel three times.
-> HAS/ HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
* USE:
- We use the present perfect when we see things happening in the past but having a result in the present.
Ex:
1. We have done our homework. ( They are done now)
2. She has washed the dished. ( They are clean now)
- - We use the present perfect when actitons happended at an unspecial time in the past.
Ex:
1 I have gone to Ha Noi.
2. He has done his house work.
- We use the present perfect when we say actions happend with references to recent time like: just, recently, already, still, yet.
Ex:
1. I have just eaten bread.
2. She has pass her driving test recently.
3.I have already done my exercises.
- We use the present perfect when we say repeated or habitual actions.
Ex:
1. I have seen " Titanic" three times.
2. Lan have gone to Nha Trang three times.
3. I hve watched him on TV sevaral times.
- We use the present perfect to say actions have been done during a period of time which continuees up to the present using : since or for
* SINCE + a point of time answers since when? With the present perfect to make a period lasting until now.
Ex:
1. I haven`t seen him since January.
2. He has finished since three hours ago.
* FOR + a period of time answer HOW LONG? We use FOR to refer to periods of time
ex:
1. We have waited for him for 2 hours.
2. I have lernt English for 4 years.
