- Teacher shows the picture of a postcard and asks students to work in groups of 4
and discuss 2 questions.
- Teacher invites some students to share their discussion and accepts reasonable
answers.

1. When do people write a postcard?
2. What do they often write on a postcard?
Suggested answers:
1. When they are away from home, often on holiday or business. They want to tell
their family or friends what they see and do, and how they feel about their time
here.
2. The sender often writes about his/her stay in a city or country.

notes or they can do it their own way.

Game: Relay-race to capital cities of ASEAN countries.
- Teacher sticks the flags of ASEAN countries on the board.
- Teacher divides the class into 2 teams. Each team will have to take turns to run in
a relay-race to write the correct names of the capital cities of ASEAN countries.
- Each team will write on the board with different colours of chalk so that the
teacher can count the correct answers easily.

questions below as a guide.
- Ask Ss to work in groups to choose a city they know and discuss. Tell them to
use the questions as a guide.
- Ask Ss to take short notes of the answers for later use.
- Go round and help if needed.

Task 5: Write a postcard of about 50 words about your holiday in a city. Use
the information in 4.
- Ask Ss to use their ideas in 4 to write a postcard to their family.
- Ask Ss to refer to Reading 2 if needed.
- If there is time, pair Ss and ask them to write postcards to each other. Have them
swap and give feedback on each other's writing once they have finished.
- Explain to Ss that there is only limited space for writing on postcards so people
often write short sentences with only key words. Tell Ss that contraction is often
used in writing postcards to make them short and informal.
Sample writing:
Ha Noi is exciting!
Its weather is great, sunny all the time! People here are friendly and helpful. They
help me to find ways and show me some interesting places. The food is cheap and
delicious. I like egg coffee and bun cha. In Ha Noi, I can see many historical
buildings, visit Ho Chi Minh mausoleum and walking around Hoan Kiem Lake to
enjoy the atmosphere. Everything is so wonderful!
