Lesson 6:

SKILLS_2/ Listening and Writing

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Competences: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Be ready to describe and give opinions about hobbies.
- Be interested more about new hobbies.
- Listen for specific information about Trang's hobby
- Write a passage about her hobbies
2. Knowledge:
*Vocabulary:
- Vocabulary: use the words related to the topic Hobbies. To pronounce the words
correctly: benefit, duty, share, decorate
* Grammar:
- use the present simple;
- use the verbs of likings;
3. Attributes:
- The awareness about importance of leisure activities.
- Students have the good attitude to working in groups, individual work, and pair
work, cooperative learning and working.
- Be interested more about new hobbies.
- Group work and independent working, pair work, linguistic competence,
cooperative learning and communicative competence.
- Ability of using Present Simple Tense, some popular verbs of liking
- Ability of using everyday English phrases and expressions and develop their
language skills, as well as learn about Vietnamese culture and other cultures.

III. PROCEDURES
1. Activity 1: WARM UP (5 minutes)
- Aims:
- To develop student's listening skills for specific information. It also provides
input for the writing skills.
- To learn how to write an email to a friend or pen pals.

- Content/Performance tasks:
- Revision: talk about your hobbies.
- Having some warm-up activities to creat a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to
inspire students to warm up to the new lesson.
- Outcome/Performance Products:
- Interest and concentration of Ss on the class activities.
- A friendly and relaxed atmosphere to the new lesson
- A chance to speak English and focus on the topic of the lesson.
- Implementation:
- Teacher (T) asks Ss some questions about them and class.
- Students (Ss) listen and answer the teacher's or friend's questions
- T asks Ss to open their book and introduce what they are going to study….
- T leads in the lesson.

2. Activity 2: PRE- STAGE (5 minutes)
Task 1:
* Aims:
- To get students to acquaint with listening skills.
- To help develop students' skills of listening for specific information.
- Content/Performance Tasks:
- To practice using the present simple in context.
- Outcome/Performance Product:
- Vocabulary about the topic
- Guessing the answers to the questions.
- Improvement of listening skills.
1. Decorate (v)/ˈdekəreɪt/: to make something look more attractive by putting
things on it (trang trí)

2. Benefit (n) /ˈbenɪfɪt/: an advantage that something gives you; a helpful and
useful effect that something has (lợi ích)

Suggested answer:
In the picture, I can see two girls. They build a dollhouse. In my opinion, their
hobby is building dollhouses. I think It's a good hobby. Because it develops your
creativity. It also makes you more patient.
TASK 1: LOOK AT THE PICTURE. WHAT HOBBY IS IT? DO YOU
THINK IT IS A GOOD HOBBY? WHY OR WHY NOT? (Ex 1, p. 15)
+ Do you know anything about building dollhouses?
+ Do you think it is a good hobby? Why/ Why not?

Pre-Listening:
VOCABULARY
- Teacher introduces the vocabulary by:
+ Providing the pictures of the words.
+ Providing the definition of the words.
TASK 1: LOOK AT THE PICTURE. WHAT HOBBY IS IT? DO YOU
THINK IT IS A GOOD HOBBY? WHY OR WHY NOT? (Ex 1, p. 15)
* Teacher asks students to work in pairs to answer the questions.

* Students work in pairs to answer.
* Students share their answers. Teacher monitors and accepts all answers if they
make sense.
* Teacher explains the way to listen to Trang's hobby and asks them to guess and
complete the mind map.
* Students share their answer.

3. Activity 3: WHILE - STAGE (25 minutes)
Task 2:
- Aims:
- To develop student's listening skills for specific information. It also provides
input for the writing skills.
- To help Ss understand and activate their knowledge of the topic.
- Content/Performance Tasks:
- Listening to two students talking about hobbies to get used to listening skills.
- Outcome/Performance Product:
- Vocabulary about the topic.
- Guessing the answers to the questions.
- Improvement of listening skills.

Lan: Today we'll talk about hobbies. I know that your hobby is building
dollhouses. It's quite unusual, isn't it?
Trang: Not really. A lot of girls like it.

Lan: When did you start doing this?
Trang: Three years ago. I read an article about building dollhouses. I loved the
idea right away.
Lan: Do any of your friends or relatives build dollhouses too?
Trang: Yes, my cousin Mi loves building them too.
Lan: Is it hard to build a dollhouse?
Trang: No, it isn't. I use cardboard and glue to build the house and make the
furniture. Then I make the dolls from cloth. Finally, I decorate the house.
Lan: What are the benefits of the hobby?
Trang: Well, I'm more patient and creative now.

TASK 2: LISTEN AND COMPLETE THE MIND MAP. (Ex 2, p. 15)
* Teacher asks students to work individually to listen and complete the word web.
* Students work individually to listen and complete the word web.
* Students work in pairs to compare their answers with each other and with the
word / phrase on the board.
* Teacher plays the recording a second time for pairs to check their answers.
* Teacher asks students to write the answers on the board.
* Teacher checks and corrects.
* Teacher gives further comments.
POST-LISTENING
* Teacher asks Ss to work in groups of four.
* Ss work in groups of four.
* Teacher asks students to summarize the information in the listening part and talk
about it.
* Teacher helps if necessary.

* Teacher gives comments and feedback.

- To help students practice using verbs in the present simple in sentences and in
context.
- To brainstorm ideas and make an outline for students' writing.

- Understand more about using the words in contexts.

1. Name of the hobby: collecting waste paper

b. make flowers, dishes, toys. boxes...

Suggested paragraph:
My hobby is gardening. I started my hobby 3 years ago. I really like it because I
can do it with my family. My family can join in and do something together. We
usually spend 1 hour on Sunday morning in our garden. I need some plants,
gloves, pots and soil to do my hobby. Gardening has many benefits. It helps me
become more patient and responsible. I also learn about insects and bugs.
Gardening can help us to protect our environment.
- Implementation:
TASK 4: WRITE A PARAGRAPH ABOUT YOUR HOBBY. (Ex 4, p.15)
* Teacher asks students to write their paragraphs individually based on the
information in their word webs.

* Students listen to the teacher then do the task individually
* Teacher asks one studentto write his / her paragraph on the board.
* Teacher asks students to check the writing.
*Teacher gives comments to the students.
* Teacher may have students do their writing on large sheets of paper and organize
a class gallery for students to display their writings on the board. Then students can
go around to see their friends' work, give and receive comments.

4. Activity 4: POST- STAGE (5 minutes)
- Aims:
To help students revise all they have learnt.
- Content/Performance:
A mind map summarizing the main points of the lesson.
- Outcome/Performance Products:
Review the old lesson
- Implementation:
- Teacher asks students to exchange their textbooks to check their friends' writing.
- Teacher summarizes the lesson by mind maps.
- Teacher then gives feedback as a class discussion.

IV. WRAP-UP ACTIVITY, GIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON SELF-STUDYING HOMEWORK / ASSIGNMENT (5 minutes)
- Teacher asks students to talk about what they have learnt in the lesson.
- Teacher guides students to prepare the coming class.
* HOMEWORK
- Finish writing the paragraph. Copy in the note books.
- Write about one of your family members' hobby in about 60 words.
- Prepare: Unit 1 Looking back & project/ page 16-17
- Review new words about hobbies.
- Review the present simple.
- Complete the project at home.
