Unit 12: Music- Basic English 10
WRITING A PROFILE.
Aims: - To practise working complete sentences and using correct tense, articles, prepositions, connectors if necessary.
- To practise making sentences, using the information from a form.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students are able to write sentences and know how to write a biography.
Aids: textbook, posters, pictures, realia.
Possible difficulties: Students may have difficulties with irregular verbs when writing, using past simple.

I. WARM-UP

*Game: CROSSWORD
- Divide the class into two groups: Group A and Group B
- Stick the Crossword Poster on the board.
- Give instructions: “We have seven rows. Each row contains one of the seven letters of the key word. Two groups take turn to choose the number from one to seven. There are two lucky numbers. If you choose them, your group gets 1 mark. If not, you have to answer my question. One mark will belong to you if you’re right. If not, the other group has the right to answer. The key word will bring you 3 marks if you can guess it correctly. At the end of the game, which group has more marks will be the winner.”
- Let the class play the game.
- Declare the winners.
* Questions and Answers of the Game:
1. What is the past participle of the verb “bear”?

2. What do you call a group consisting of parents and their children”?

* Task 1:
- Ask the class to open their books, page 129.
- Ask the class to work in pairs in 5 minutes.
-Give some notices:
+Verb tense: Past Simple
+Adding verbs, articles, prepositions and connectors when writing if necessary
- Call students to go to the board and write down their complete sentences.
- Ask other students to correct the mistakes.
-Check all the answers again, correct any mistakes.
-Ask the students to copy down in their notebooks.
** Answers:
1. He learned to play music when he was young.
2. Scott learned to play the works of composers like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart as well as to compose music.
3. He quickly became famous.
4. His tunes were wonderful mixture of classical European and African beats which were know as Ragtime.
5. All in all, he wrote 50 piano rags, and was called the King of Ragtime.
6. Scott Joplin died in 1917.
* Task 2:
- Divide the class into 3 groups.
-Give instructions: Use the form in the textbook to write the life story of Van Cao on the poster in 5 minutes. Then stick all the posters on the board.
- After 5 minutes, ask the students to stick their posters on the board.
- Ask students to go to the board and correct any mistakes.
- Give feedback and give correct answers.
- Ask the students to copy down.
** Answers:
Van Cao was born on the fifteenth of November, 1923 in Nam Dinh, into a poor worker family (His parents were poor workers). However, he started composing music when he was young. His first song (Suoi mo) was written in 1939 and it quickly became famous. The song “Tien quan ca”, which is the national anthem of Vietnam, was written in 1944. His artistic works were songs, poems and paintings (He was also good at other artistic works like song writing, poem writing and paintings). He died on the tenth of July, 1995. He was (is) known as a very talented musician and highly appreciated by the Vietnamese people.

- Stick a picture on the blackboard
- Ask some questions about the man in the picture:
+ “Who is he?
+ Do you know anything about him?”
- Ask the students to work in pairs.
- Intrucstions: “ I want you to create a profile for this man. Imagine any information you can about his name, date of birth, place of birth, events in life. Don’t care about the correctness of the information, you just have to imagine. Remember that the information should be reasonable. For example, You can’t say, “He was born in 1998 and died in 2000”. After 2 minutes, I will invite some of you to talk about his life story.”
- After 2 minutes, call some students to talk about the man’s life story.
- Correct some mistakes students make in their speaking.
- Look at the picture.
- Answer, if possible.
- Listen to the instructions
- Work in pairs.
- Talk about the man’s life
