UNIT 7: WORLD POPULATION
A. Reading
Time: 45 minutes
I. Objectives:
1. Educational aim: students should know about world population.
2. Knowledge:
- General knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand more about the world population.
- Language:
- New words: Words related to world population.
3. Skills: Guessing meaning in context, and passage comprehension
II. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative
III. Teaching aids: Textbook, some photos
IV. Procedure:

Warm-up: (5 minutes)
- Ask students to close the book and play game named GUESSING WORDS.
- Show the pictures as prompts to help students.
- Require students to work in pairs, study the picture in the textbook and answer the question:
“Do you think a family with so many children is usually rich or poor?”
Lead in: Today we are learning about world population.
Before you read : (7 minutes)
- Ask students to scan the passage and find out new words.
- Elicit students the meanings of new words.
- Give meanings of new words if necessary.
- Read vocabularies first to make model and then ask students to repeat in chorus several times.
- Call on some students to read out vocabularies in front of the class.
- Correct errors in pronunciation.
While you read : (23 minutes)
- Ask students to look through the passage and read in silence
- Help students read the passage
Task 1 :
- Ask students to do task 1
- Let students work individual or in groups
- Help students if necessary
Task 2:
- Ask students to read the passage again then look through the questions and underline key words.
- Divide the whole class into two big groups and let them play the game named LUCKY COUNTRY.
- Introduce the rule of the game.
- Ask students to take turn choose the pictures and answer the questions.
- Tell other group to give comment and give correct answers.
- Give present to the winner.
After you read : (8 minutes)
- Ask students to work in groups to find out the words basing on the suggestions.
- Go around helping the groups when necessary.
- Call on some groups to give their answers.
- Listen to students and correct mistakes
Consolidation: (1 minute)
- Summarize the main points of the lesson.
- Remind students to focus on the main points of the passage.
Home work: (1 minute)
- Ask students to do Reading exercise of Unit 7 in workbook and prepare Part B: Speaking at home.
- Listen to the teacher, look at the pictures and guess the words.
- Suggested answers:

+ poverty
+ homeless
+ shortage of foods
+ lack of schools
+ unemployment
--> The main cause of these problems is the increase of population.
- Work in pair and give their own opinion.
- Listen to the teacher and open the book – Unit 7, part A: reading

- Listen and repeat the words several times in chorus.
- Read out vocabularies in front of the class.
