UNIT 11: WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU?
LESSON 1(1+2)
I/ Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Ask and answer questions about common health problems.
Express health problems and give responses.
II/ Teaching aids: worksheet, tape recordings, flashcards,
III/ New language:
Phonics: arm ear
Vocabulary: arm, headache, earache, sore eyes, stomachache, pain, toothache, backache, sore throat, temperature, cold, matter, should.
Sentence Patterns: What’s the matter with you?
I’ve got a headache.
I’ve got a sore throat.

Organization: (5’)
Check up (2’): check students’ attendance.
Warmer (3’): Sts sing the song Head, Shoulder, Knee and toes.
II. New lesson (28’)
Look, listen and repeat. (14’)
Teach new words:
New words:
headache: đau đầu
Temperature: sốt
Earache: đau tai
Stomachache: đau bụng
Toothache: đau răng
Backache: đau lưng
Sore throat: đau họng
Cold: cảm lạnh
- Ask students to open their Student’s Book on P6. Get them to read the title and the pictures to identify the characters. Set the context: Tom is late for breakfast. Mrs Green is coming to his bedroom. Point to each picture, read the text and check sts’ comprehension.
- Listen and repeat the new words (x3)
- Call some sts to read aloud new words.
- Play the recordings for students to listen (x2) and ask them to mime the dialogue.
- Read each exchange in the pictures, call on some pairs to read the dialogue.
- Stop at times to check sts’ comprehension.
- Make sure that the sts can understand the situation and language in each picture. Playing the recording twice, once for all through and once for repeat.
- Call some sts to read aloud in front of class.
2. Point, ask and answer: (14’)
- Draw sts’ attention to the book covers. Point to each cover and ask sts to say it in English. Then say: You are going to practice asking and answering questions about common health problems.
- Ask sts to collect the new structure in the dialogue.
Model sentence:
A: What’s the matter with you?
B: ______________________.
e.g. A: What’s the matter with you?
B: I’ve got a headache.
- Ask sts to read example and elicit their prompts to complete the speech bubbles. Write the lines on the board. Get sts to repeat the question and answer a few times. Point to each picture to recall the vocabulary.
- Ask sts to practice in pairs.
- Call some sts to practice in front of class.
III. Summary (1’)
- In this lesson, Sts have learnt to ask and answer questions about common health problems, using: A: What’s the matter with you?
B: I’ve got a headache.
IV. Homelink (1’)
- Sts draw a simple picture of the body and name the body parts they have learnt.
Say “Yes” or “No” when hearing their names.
Sing the song.
Look, listen and repeat
Write down the new words and learn how to pronounce them.
Open their books and listen.
Listen and repeat the words.
Read new words
Listen to the dialogue.
Read the dialogue. Work in pairs.
Look at the pictures, and answer the questions.
