Lesson 1: Reading
A. Objectives
By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to:
- Develop such reading skills as understanding main ideas, scanning for specific information, guessing meaning in context, and summarizing.
- Use the information they have read to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different sources of energy.

- Call on 2 ss to do the ex.
- Write the word “ENERGY” on the board.
- Divide the class into groups of 10, give them the handouts, and introduce the game: The groups should identify from the given list as many words related to this word as possible in 5 minutes.
- Choose correct words:
+ power, fuel, nuclear, solar, wind, water, heat, geothermal, renewable, non-renewable, earth, windmill, oil, coal, gas, electricity, petroleum.
- Lead in the lesson
* List of words: endangered animals, power, pollutants, fuel, weapon, nuclear, air, solar, environment, wind, fertilizer, water, food, heat, oxygen, geothermal, zoos, renewable, non-renewable, earth, moon, windmill, cooker, oil, forest, coal, gas, ocean, dust, electricity, petroleum, pesticides, soil, smoke.
- Hang some pictures on the board and ask ss to call the pictures’ names.
- Ask ss to answer the questions:
1. What source of energydoes each picture above refer to?
2. What do you need energy for?

- Read all the new words at first, then ask ss to repeat at least twice.
- Call on some ss to read again.
* While- reading
- Set the scene: you are going to read about alternative sources of energy and do the tasks in the textbook.
- Play CD and ask ss to read after in silent.
Gap- fill
- Set the requirement: fill in the blank with a suitable word given which appear in the reading passage.
- Ask ss to read through all the statements in Task 1.
- Give some cues if needed.
- Collect ss answers on the board.
- Feedback and give correct answers:
1.release 2. alternative 3. energy
4. limited 5. exhausted
- Call on a student to read aloud the requirement.
- Hang the extra-board on and beside stick the answer but not in order.
- Ask ss to read the passage again then go to the board stick the answer into the suitable blank.
- Call on other ss comment.
