Unit 11: national parks
Lesson 4: Writing
I. Objectives:
1. Knowledge:
- General knowledge: Writing a letter of acceptance or refusal to reply an invitation letter.
- Language: +The tenses.
+ Expressions of accepting and refusing.
- New words: Words related to picnic and national parks.
2. Skills:
- Writing an informal letter.
3. Educational aim:
- Student can know how to write a letter of acceptance or refusal.
II. Materials:
Pictures, book, lesson plan, projector, poster, …..
III. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative
IV. Procedure:
1. Organization
- greeting
- Check sts’ participation: Who is absent today?
2. Check old lesson:

A. Warm-up: (5 mins)
- show some pictures on screen.
- ask sts to look at the pictures and answer the questions:
1. What can you see in the pictures?
2. What are people in the pictures doing?
3. Would you like to take part in a picnic or a party? Why?
- Raise the situation: One of your friend write to you a letter to invite you to join them having a picnic, read the letter and tell me: what will you do after you read the letter?
-> Lead in the letter of acceptance or refusal.
B. Pre-writing: (5 mins)
- Introduce some useful expressions of acceptance and refusal.
- Give sts handout of some expressions.
- Ask sts discuss in groups and go to the board to tick the expression on the right column.
- give feedback.
- ask sts to read aloud the expressions.
C. While-writing:
Task 1(5 mins)
Instruct sts how to do task 1: use the expressions above to complete these letters.
Give an example.

Set the time for sts to do task 1: 2 mins
Call on sts to give the answers.
Give feedback.
Task 2(10mins)
Instruct sts how to do task 2: rearrange the sentences to make a full letter of acceptance.
Ask sts to read through the sentences to find new words.
Explain the new words if necessary.
Set the time: 3 mins
Ask sts to work in pairs to do the task.
Call on sts to give their answer.
Give feedback.
Help sts to write the outline of an accepting or refusing letter.
Outline: (3 main parts)
Starting:
+Greeting :Dear + name,/ Hi +Name,…
Body:
+ Thank you words :thanks much to invite me/ thank you for your invitation/…
+ Your acceptance or refusal
+ Reasons why you accept or refuse
Closing
+ Concluding words: Give my best regards to…/ I’m looking forwards to seeing you soon/ best wishes for you/…
+ Signature: Love, / Truly love,/ ….
Ask sts to take note the outline
Task 3: (10 mins)
Instruct sts how to do task 3: write a letter of acceptance or refusal
Ask sts to use the suggestions in task 1 and task 2
Divide the sts into 4 groups and deliver the paper to each group to write.
Set the time: 7-10 mins
Go round to observe and give help if necessary.
Ask sts to show their writing when they finish.
D. Post-writing: (7 mins)
- Ask some groups to represent their work, ask others to give remarks.
- Choose some good writing to read in class and give remarks.
Look at the pictures and answer the questions.
+ we can see people, food, cake,…
+ they are having a picnic and having a party.
+ I would like to take part in a picnic because it is interesting.
