I. PRESENTATION

1. PRONUNCIATION

- Ask sts to repeat the rule of pronunciate “ed” and ‘e, es”.

* How to pronunciate “ed”:

a. The /id/ sound:
If the last letter of the word is spelled with D or T, the ED is pronounced as a separate syllable with an /id/ sound (it rhymes with kid and lid).
b. The /t/ sound:
If the last consonant of the word is voiceless, then the ED is pronounced as a T. Be careful not to create an extra syllable or "id" sound.
c. The /d/ sound:
If the last letter of the words ends in a voiced consonant (or sound), then the ED is pronounced like a D (without creating another syllable).

* How to pronunciate “s/es”:

a. The /i+z/ sound:
Pronounce the -s, -es, `s ending as as short i+z sound when the final sound before the addition of the -s, -es, `s ending is any of the following: s sound, z sound, ch sound, j sound, sh sound, or zh sound.
b. The /s/ sound:
When the final sound of the word is an unvoiced sound (except the sounds listed for pattern #1), the -s, -es, `s ending is pronounced as an s sound.
c. The /z/ sound:
When the final sound of the word is a voiced sound (except the sounds listed for pattern #1), the -s, -es, `s ending is pronounced as a z sound.
