UNIT 13: HOBBIES
Period 83 – SPEAKING

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Knowledge:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Talk about their own hobbies and express the reasons they take up such hobbies.
Make a dialogue to ask and answer about a certain hobby.
Fluency in expressing the hobby.
2. Skills
Improve speaking skill.
3. Language:
Lexical items: hobby, category, classify,....
4. Attitudes:
Be aware of the hobbies and feel interested in reading about the hobbies.
II. TIME: 45 minutes
III. TEACHING AIDS
1. Teacher:
Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan, computer, powerpoint, chalk.
Teaching method: Communicative language teaching.
2. Students:
Textbook.
Reading new lesson and looking up new words before going to class.

Class organization (1 minnutes)
T begins the class with some common greetings by saying:
“Good morning, class. How are you keeping today?”
T checks the attendance:
“The monitor, who is absent today?”
Ss greet T by answering T’questions

Warm up (5 minutes):
Look at the pictures and guess: What are the names of the hobbies described in the pictures?

T asks Ss to guess the name of these pictures
T checks and corrects answer.
Lead in:
“Today we are going to learn how to ask and answer about a person’s hobbies”.

B – Speaking
T asks Ss to open their book page 148.
Pay attention
Guess the name of the hobbies
Suggested answer:
1, fishing
5, chatting with a friend on the phone
2, mountain climbing
6, watching TV
3, swimming
7, playing computer games
4, reading books
8, collecting stamps
Listen to the teacher
Pay attention and take notes
Pre – Speaking (10 minutes):
Task 1: Work in pairs. Say which of the following you would like/ not like to do and why.
T asks Ss to read through the names of hobbies.
T gives example:
A: Which of the hobbies would you like to do?
B: I like swimming best because I find it interesting. It’s also good for my health and keeps me fit.
A: And which one wouldn’t you like to do?
B: I don’t like fishing. Because I’m not patient enough.
Ask 2 students to act out the dialogue
T presents some structures to Ss:
I like + V-ing BECAUSE............
I don’t like + V-ing BECAUSE..............
More words that you can use to describe your hobbies:
Creative
Practical
Cheap
Enjoyable
Relaxing
...
Boring
Impatient
Lazy
Dangerous
...
BECAUSE it is: interesting/ useful/ good for my health/ keeps me fit,...
BECAUSE it makes me feel glad/ comfortable/ ......
Now, ask Ss to work in pairs to ask and answers
T calls on some pairs to stand up and ask and answer
T corrects their pronunciation and intonation
T checks and gives feedback
Read through the names of hobbies
Pay attention
2 Ss read aloud the example
Take notes
Work in pairs to talk about their hobbies
Listen to the teacher
*Suggested:
“I like arts and crafts. Because I’m a creative/ practical person, and like doing things with my hands”.
“I like going to shopping with my friends, because it makes me relax and feel comfortable”.
“I enjoy being physically active, and spend a lot of time playing sports and team games”.
While – Speaking (23 minutes):
Task 2: Lan is talking to Huong about her hobby of collecting books. Practise reading their dialogue with a partner.
T asks Ss to read the dialogue in silence
T introduces some new words:
Regularly (adv): thường xuyên, đều đặn
Immediately (adv): ngay lập tức
Classify (v): phân loại, sắp xếp
Category (n): loại, hạng
T asks Ss to work in pairs to act out the dialogue
T goes around the class and help Ss with difficult words
T calls on 1 or 2 pairs to read the dialogue
Correct their pronunciation and intonation
After sts have finished reading, ask them
