UNIT 11: WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU?
Lesson 1
Aims: Sts will be able
- to ask and answer questions about common health problems.

Warmer (5’): Sts sing the song Head, Shoulder, Knee and toes.
I. New lesson (25’)
1. Look, listen and repeat.
- Ask students to open their Student’s Book on P6. Get them to read the title and the pics to identify the characters. Set the context: Tom is late for breakfast. Mrs Green is coming to his bedroom. Point to each pic, read the text and check sts’ comprehension.
New words:
headache: đau đầu
Temperature: sốt

Earache: đau tai
Stomachache: đau bụng

Toothache: đau răng
Backache: đau lưng

Sore throat: đau họng
Cold: cảm lạnh

- Listen and repeat the new words (x3)
- Call some sts to read aloud
- Read each exchange in the pics, stop at times to check sts’ comprehension.
- Make sure that the sts can understand the situation and language in each pic. Playing the recording twice, once for all through and once for repeat.
- Call some sts to read aloud in front of class.
2. Point, ask and answer:
- Draw sts’ attention to the book covers. Point to each cover and ask sts to say it in English. Then say: You are going to practice asking and answering qs abt common health problems.
- Ask sts to read example and elicit their prompts to complete the speech bubbles. Write the lines on the board. Get sts to repeat the question and answer a few times. Point to each pic to recall the vocabulary.
Model sentence:
A: What’s the matter with you?
B: I’ve got a headache.
- Ask sts to practice in pairs.
- Call some sts to practice in front of class
3. Listen and tick
- Ask sts to open their Student’s Book on P7. Draw their attention to the pics in each number. Then point to each pic to elicit sts’ responses to the information indicated by the pic. Explain the listening purpose: Look at the pics. You are going to hear some ppl talking abt their illnesses. You should listen and tick the appropriate pics.
- Play the recording twice.
- Replay the recording to check. Get them to correct their answers in pairs. Ask Sts to report the answers to the class, if there is disagreement on any answer, play the tape related to the part again.
