- Problem: Ss may not sufficient vocabulary to speak
- Solution: Teacher should provide them with knowledge about volunteer works

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to
- Enhance vocabulary about volunteer works and understand more about why people volunteer.
- Interpret the meaning of new words from their contexts.
- Get some structures express giving opinions
- Improve the skill : reading for specific information about reasons why people do volunteer work.
- Improve the reading strategies when dealing with gapped text exercises

Warm up


T ask Ss :
+ Have you ever volunteered ?
+ Which volunteer works did you do ?
+ Why do people volunteer ?
T call Ss to answer the questions and share their opinions, encouraging different viewpoints.

Warm up the class’s ambiance.

Task 1
 T introduce the title of the reading text and elicit the reasom why people volunteer.
T ask Ss to tick the reasons they may read about in the text and then compare their choices with their partner’s
New words

+ Pride (n) niềm tự hào
+ Broad (adj) rộng
+ Range ( n) phạm vi, lĩnh vực

Tick the reasons they may find in the text before reading
Support Ss the new words or structures expressing the reassons why people volunteer

Task 2
New words:
+ Passionate (adj ) about sth: say sưa, sôi nổi, thiết tha
+ Fortunate (adj ) may mắn, thuận lợi
+ Scale (n)
+ Concerned (adj ) được quan tâm
+ Narrow- minded (adj ) nhỏ nhen, hẹp hòi
+ Dedicated (adj) tận tụy, tận tâm
T ask Ss to pronounce above words and phrases loudly in chorus
Ask Ss to scan the text and check their predictions in task 1
Check Ss’s answers

The whole class pronounce all words in chorus


Task 3
Ask Ss if they remember strategies to deal with this reading exercises – Gapped Text or Missing sentences.
T repeat them the strategies if necessary.
*Reading strategies for Gapped Text or Missing sentences :
+ Reading the text quickly to get general ideas of what it is about.
+ Read the removed sentences. Think about the meaning of these sentences and make sure they match the meaning of the text before and after the gaps.
+ Make sure that the extra sentence doesn’t fit in any of the gaps. If it does, check your work again.
Ask Ss to do this activity individually , then compare with a partner.
Check Ss’s answers and give further explanation if necessary.

Work individually to complete the text by matching sentences a-e with gaps 1-4
Enhancing and Improving the reading strategies when dealing with gapped text exercises

Task 4
T ask Ss to look back at the reading text to locate the highlighted words
T ask Ss to guess the meaning of each of these highlighted words, based on the context.
Have them choose their meaning , then compare their choices with other friends.
Check Ss’s answers.
Key : 1- A, 2- B, 3- C, 4- B, 5- A

Work individually to guess the meaning highlighted words in contex, then choose the best answers
Help Ss understand more about the meaning of words by guessing the meaning of words in context

Task 5
Ask Ss to work in pairs to discuss the statements
T support some different ways or structures to express giving opinions

Call on some pairs to perform in front of the whole class.
