UNIT 2. CULTURAL DIVERSITY
PART A. READING
I/ Objectives:
- Guessing meaning in context
- Passage comprehension
II/ Materials: books, pictures, board, chalk, etc.
III/ Procedure:

Warm up: (4 minutes)
- T asks Ss: - Which is more precious money or health?
Before you read: (7 minutes)
- Ss: work in pairs, discuss the question:
Which of the following factories is the most important for a happy life? Why?
While you read: (20 minutes)
Task 1:
- Tgives instruction for task 1, explains some new words:
+ Contractual marriage
+ Physical attractiveness
+ Trust built on love
- Ss: read task 1 carefully in silence and find out the meaning of the italicized words.
Task 2:
- T asksSs to read the text again, answer the questions in the full form.
- T asks them to write on board/ corrects mistakes.
After you read: (12 minutes)
- T asks Ss to discuss the question: What are the differences between a traditional Vietnamese family and a modern Vietnamese family?
- T asks a representative of each group to talk in front of the class.
Home work:(2 minutes)

Part A. Reading
I. Before you read:
Example: - Having good health is the most important for a happy life . We can have nothing when we don’t have good health.
II. While you read:
Task 1:
New words:
+ Contractual marriage
+ Physical attractiveness
+ Trust built on love
Keys:
(1) Precede = happen or exist before.
(2) To determine = to find out.
(3) To confide = to trust.
(4). To sacrifice = to willingly stop having something you want.
(5). is obliged = having a duty to do st.
Task 2:
Keys:
1. They are Physical attractiveness; Confiding; Partnership of equals; trust built on love.
2. The young Americans are much concerned than the young Indians and the Chinese with physical attractiveness when choosing a wife or a husband.
3. The Indian students agree that a woman has to sacrifice more in a marriage than a man.
4. The American wife trusts her husband to do the right thing because he loves her not because he has to do.
5. The main finding of the survey is that young Asians are not as romantic as their American counterparts are.

Why should a happy marriage be based on love?
Pre-speaking: (8 minutes)
Task 1:
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to express their point of view upon the following sentences, using the words or expressions below :
+ I think / feel/ believe …/ I don’t agree
+ In my opinion … / It’s not true…
+ For me …/ That’s wrong
Model the task:
A: I think it’s a good idea to have 3 or 4 generations living under 1 roof. They can help each other a lot.
B: It’s not true in some countries many old – aged parents like to live in a nursing house. They want to lead independent lives.
While-speaking: (16 minutes)
Task 2:
- T gives instruction for task 2, explain some new words:
+ income/ groceries ..
- T asks students to read the typical features of the American culture, and then find out the corresponding features of the Vietnamese culture.
A: There are differences and similarities between Vietnamese and American cultures. In America, 2 generations (parents and children) live in a home
B: But in Vietnamese, 2 or 3 even 4 generations live uncle one roof.
Post-speaking: (14 minutes)
Task 3:
- T asks Ss to work in groups to talk about:
the similarities >< differences in Vietnamese >< in America culture.
