WARM – UP : 5mins
- Check Ss’ homework: Write a biography about Ss’ relatives
- Write down their homework on the board
PRONUNCIATION : 10mins
* Listen and repeat:
- Ask Ss to listen to the sounds through the CD, then repeat
- Call on Ss to read
- Listen and give feedback
* Practise reading the dialogue
- Play the CD for Ss to listen to the sounds in sentences
- Have Ss practice the dialogue in pairs
- Go round and offer help when necessary
- Call on some pairs to practice
- Listen and give feedback
- Listen and repeat
- Practise in pairs
GRAMMAR : 18mins
* Could(n’t) / Be (not) able to
- Either can be used for past ability:
E.g.: When I was young I could/ was able to climb any trees in the forest.
- For ability + particular action, use was able:
E.g.: Although the pilot was badly hurt he was able to explain what had happened.
( He could and did explain)
- In the negative when the actions did not take place, or with the verbs of senses (understand/ see/ hear…) (either can be used:
E.g.: He read the message but he couldn’t / wasn’t able to understand it.
I could / was able to see him through the window.
Exercise 1: Completing sentences
- Have Ss do exercise 1 individually
- Go round and offer help when necessary
- Call on Ss to give their answers

2. The film was great, wasn’t it ?
3. She’s got a lovely voice, doesn’t she ?
4. It doesn’t look very good, does it ?
