Nouns and this/that/these/those
Aims:
By the end of the leson, Ss will be able to get more practice and know how to change singular Nouns to plural Nouns. Review some kinds of questions.
Procedure
1. Warm up

Brainstorm: living room vocabulary
2. Content
A. Theory:
A.1. Nouns.
* Nouns are the name of people, things, …
* There are two kinds of noun.
1) Uncountable nouns. (there are not plural forms)
Eg: water, hair, rice
2) Countable nouns. (there are plural forms)
Eg: book, pen, student
=> Plural forms of countable nouns.
2.1. N + es (N end by ch, sh, s, o, x, z)
Eg: bench -> benches
N_o -> N_os (if before “o” is a vowel)
Eg: stereo -> stereos
2.2. N_y -> N_ies (if before “y” is a consonant)
Eg: city -> cities
N_y -> N-ys (if before “y” is a vowel)
Eg: boy -> boys
2.3. N_f/fe -> N_ves
Eg: shelf -> shelves
2.4. Irregulal rules. (Must learn by heart)
Eg: man –> men, child –> children, foot –> feet, goose -> geese, ...
2.5. N + s (the rest nouns)
* Pronunciation:
/s/ = ts, ps, ks ;
/iz/ = ses, ches, shes, xes, ces, ges, zes
/vz/ = ves ;
/z/ = the left words
A.2. This/ That/ These/ Those...
2.1. This/ That is (not) + a/ an/ (my) + N.
Is this/ that + a/ an/ (your) ...? -Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.
(What) is this/ that? - It’s + a/ an/ (my) + N.
2.2. These/ Those are (not) + (my) + Ns
Are these/ those + (your) + Ns? -Yes, they are./ No, they aren,t.
(What) are these/ those? - They are + (my) + Ns.
B. Drill exercises
Ex1: Write the plural forms of nouns:
armchair, table, family, book, couch, leaf, box, window, stereo, class, student, clock, eraser, bench, desk, lamp, city, bookshelf, stool, potato.
The keys:
armchairs, tables, families, books, couches, leaves, boxes, windows, stereos, classes, students, clocks, erasers, benches, desks, lamps, cities, bookshelves, stools, potatoes.
Ex2: Put the plural nouns from Ex1 into the correct line: /s/, /z/, /iz/
The keys:
- /s/: books, students, clocks, desks, lamps
- /z/: armchairs, tables, windows, stereos, erasers, stools
- /iz/: families, couches, boxes, classes, benches, cities
- /vz/: leaves, bookshelves
Ex3: Write the questions from the answers.
No. That’s my classroom.
It is an eraser.
Yes. This is my pen
These are windows.
They’re counches.
The key:
Is this your classroom?
What is this/that?
Is this your pen?
What are these?
What are these/those?
Ex4: Change these sentences into plural sentences.
This is an armchair.
It is a couch.
What is this? It’s a stereo.
What is that ? It’s a bookshelf.
That is an eraser.
I am a student.
There is a lake near the house.
The keys:
These are armchairs.
They are couches.
What are these? They are stereos.
What are those? They are bookshelves.
Those are erasers.
We are students.
There are lakes near the house.
EX5: Say the correct stress of the words.
morning, evening, afternoon, window, pencil, teacher, ruler, student, eraser, table, telephone, armchair, television, bookshelf, stereo, engineer, family.
