In what ways have families changed in the last 100 years?
1/
For 100 years we go back to 1920. There was lots of dancing. Common people tried to get rich by buying stocks on margin - some made it and some went broke. During the Great Depression most folks lived without money, unemployment was huge, many who were working weren’t gaining any pay, there was much homelessness, many men in despair abandoned their families and sought work elsewhere, traveling on RRs, becoming ‘bindle bums’. During the late 30s and 40s there was some recovery with make-work jobs, and some real work, the unions prospered and aided in the rise of wages. Real estate was very cheap because it was a buyers market. The auto industry expanded. During the mid 40s the nation was fully employed with the war effort, consumer goods and some food products became scarce, thus bank accounts blossomed. The post-war 50s saw a boom in housing. Depression era families had enough money and a firm determination to buy a small farm. Communication made huge advancements in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, especially TV and cell phones. The 60s, 70s, and 80s saw a huge advancement in the fields of higher education.

In days of old it was very important with honor, self respect, dignity, that the children should bring honor to the family by getting good jobs etc, today such things doesn’t matter as much in the west.
In days of old the woman usually was responsible for raising the children while the man was out earning money. It was the man`s right to beat the family and in some cases the servants. No matter what you should always appear as your best, be in your sunday’s finest if being photographed. Widows was heavily encouraged to let men take care of their money by remarrige, but they often drank and gambled the money away.

With the onset of the era of industrialisation since 17th cenury, the concept of joint families as well as extended fmilies strted diminishing and now it has totally changed the structure of the families. Now preference of individuals is for nuclear families thereby reducing the fabric of close knit relationship. This chnge in stucture has decentralized the power structure i.e. transfering power from genertion to genertion unlike traditionl joint families where decision making authority ws in the. head of the household.

As a genealogist I have seen records of my ancestors going back to the 1500’s. Here is some of what I have seen: 1. Women married in early teens, had up to a dozen children (sometimes more) and died in their early 30’s 2. More than half the children born died before age 10. 3. Men lived into their early 80’s. 4. Oldest male child inherited the farm. 5. Men that worked on the land ate an average of 3 loaves of bread until the evening meal — and nothing else. It was a tough life before antibiotics!

How has society changed the most in the past 100 years?

Somewhere, between killing a girl child to,
Having only a girl child. The society has changed.
Somewhere, between not allowing girls to attend the school to,
Letting them work even in the night, the society has changed.
From marrying them off in their early ages to,
Giving them freedom to be unmarried even in their 30s, the society has changed.
Somewhere between, not allowing them to even see their partners to,
Accepting their lovers for marriage, the society has changed.
From, only teaching them household works to,
Not disturbing them while they are studying, the society has changed.
From forcing them to cover every part of the body and not to even show their faces to,
Let them have a choice of wearing whatsoever they like, the society changed.
Somewhere between, not allowing them to raise their voices to,
Let them even rule the country, the society changed.
Somewhere, between not giving dalits permission to even visit temples,
To let them become the President, the society has changed.
Taking advantages from the poor, to,
Feeding them from their hands, the society has changed.
From making people their slaves to,
Giving opportunities to each one of them, the society has changed
From slaughtering the animals for selfish motives to,
Providing them residences similar to their habitats and rescuing them during natural disasters, the society changed.
Living in joint families, and giving back to each other in tough times to,
Leaving even parents for self comfort, the society has changed.
From remaining fit to earn money to,
Spending money to remain fit, society has changed.
From gatheing together for someone’s else problem to,
Not to get bother about problems of their own relatives, the society has changed.
From having leaders who want to serve the people to,
Having leaders who just want the power.
Society has changed!
Society has changed in each manner, positive
